Chuma Memela is a driven leader in the tech industry, actively building and serving as the co-founder of Gambuu and the founder of Genie-yus AI, both pioneering tech startups under development.
Beyond his entrepreneurial work, Chuma also wears his economist hat as a seasoned research consultant, working as part of a team that focuses on economic development. In this role, he contributes to shaping government economic policies for state organs such as the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, and the Eastern Cape Development Corporation.
Alongside this, Chuma runs AI workshops for entrepreneurs, small businesses, and professionals. These sessions are practical and hands-on, showing participants how to use artificial intelligence in their everyday operations. From writing proposals and creating content, to building digital brands and making data-informed decisions, the workshops are designed to give people skills they can apply immediately to save money, work more efficiently, and open new opportunities.
Chuma's academic journey is equally impressive. He holds an undergraduate degree in Commerce with majors in Economics and Information Systems, graduating cum laude with 23 distinctions during his studies. Chuma was also the top performer in his honours year, where he completed a Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Information Systems.
Added to that, his first-ever conference paper from his honours work was published in the IST Africa international journal. His educational pursuits continued with a Business & Information Technology Programme at the University of Free State Business School in partnership with EBL Institute. His excellence was recognized with several awards including an 89% finish, 1st Place Top Achiever in the Eastern Cape, 3rd Place out of 500 students nationally, and a Dedication Award.
Currently, he is advancing his expertise by pursuing a Master of Commerce in Information Systems.
Chuma’s reputation as a thought leader in artificial intelligence has made him a sought after speaker. He has shared his insights on platforms such as JCI Durban, JCI Nigeria, EBL Institute, BCM and Local Economic Development, the National Youth ICT Council, Keith Ngesi Radio, Mdantsane FM, Tru FM, and Forte FM. He has also spoken at the Trialogue Business in Society Conference, the JCI South Africa National Convention, the NWU Technology Transfer and Innovation Support Webinar, and the AI eKasi and eMakhaya Tech Innovation Initiatives.
